Director David Lynch launched this assault on the emotions of cinemagoers back in 1986 and it remains a powerful piece of work.
In a small, white picket-fenced US town lives a square-jawed youngster (Kyle McLachlan) who, along with the daughter (Laura Dern) of the local police chief, decides to investigate the bizarre find of a severed ear in a local field. However, little can prepare the curious duo for the discovery they'll make and the dark secrets which lie behind the doors of their quaint, well-groomed burgh.
With Blue Velvet, which isn't so much a hybrid of film noir and '50s family flicks as a head-on smash between the genres. Lynch shocked a generation and it isn't hard to see why, as the scenes switch from bright sunshine and friendly neighbours to assaults and Dennis Hopper's evil, gas-imbibing madman. That said, Lynch's stylisation and mise-en-scene grab you and don't let go, with blue and red tones saturating the screen. Meanwhile the sadomasochistic overtones will leave a very bitter taste in your mouth. A stunning piece of filmmaking.
