Set just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this dark comedy finds Signs star Joaquin Phoenix making the best of a dull situation.
They say that war is hell but Specialist Ray Elwood (Phoenix) thinks that peace is boring. Stationed at the Theodore Roosevelt Army Base just outside Stuttgart, Elwood has got his finger in every illegal pie going and he's doing very nicely thank you very much largely thanks to the inability of base Commander Wallace Berman (Ed Harris) to spot what's going on right under his nose. But when a new Sergeant (Scott Glenn) arrives to clean up the base, it means trouble for Elwood - especially when he claps eyes on his nemesis' rebellious young daughter (Anna Paquin).
Similar in feel to the likes of M*A*S*H and Sgt. Bilko but with a much darker edge, Buffalo Soldiers, it a genuinely fantastic piece of filmmaking. Made pre-9/11, the film may hit a raw nerve here or there but that's what all the best satires are meant to do.
