Gang film pulled from cinemas

Fri Oct 30 11:03AM by Movies Editor

A film depicting the violent life of inner city gangs in Birmingham has been pulled from two cinema chains on police advice.

Odeon and Cineworld have refused to screen '1 DAY', which is released on 6th November, in their Birmingham cinemas after they were advised by police not to.

A spokesperson for Odeon said, "Odeon has taken the decision not to screen '1 DAY' at Odeon Birmingham, following advice from West Midland police."

However, the police claim they never formally requested the film, which focuses on the lives of two inner city gangs in the notorious Handswoth area, to be banned but are investigating whether a police officer working on his own behalf made the request.

The film will be shown in Odeon and Cineworld's other cinemas nationwide.

No matter what you think of the ban, it's clear that the film has been injected with a new surge of publicity which they wouldn't have received otherwise. The film's director, Penny Woolcock added, "I hope people at least start talking about some of these issues instead of ignoring it and refusing to show the films."

Do you agree with Odeon and Cineworld's decision, or should they let people make up their own mind whether to watch the film or not?

I suspect it will glorify gang culture - the scourge of modern society.

this is an intrusion of democracy. Why dont they start banning big Hollywood film that actually show gorr scenes for cheap thrills? they should start with the SAW franchise

This film should not have been made, our children have got to learn there is no glory only sadness and grief when you are part of a gang, and the violance that follows.

Without seeing the film, can anyone really comment for or against it fairly? It may well help to highlight the issues, therefore helping to resolve them. Show the film! Eddie5 Brighton

I agree 100% with their decision. It`s bad enough that this country`s crime rate is so high without having stupid films gloryfying it.

Violence should not be tolerated and advertised at all. The director of the film should be accountable and fined for imposing violence in his film. We have plenty of violence in the UK everyday. It is time to stop psychopaths like one of this film maker.

i wonder about the gang culture as scourge of modern society. I'm not overly convinced that is 'new' or modern-just a different form of resistance. french revolution was a gang, but with political ends (other throw the monarchy). pehaps the only difference is that those who are in gangs now perceive that in a westen global market place they have no ends which can be achieved because they also desire to be part of that global market place. when you can't be the monarchy you can overthrow them, when you also want to be the rich and famous, why would you actively organise to oerthrow them?
