The crude anti-Islam movie that caused chaos in the Middle East

In the wake of the horrific attack on the US embassy in Benghazi, sketchy details on the anti-Islamic movie that may have incited the riots have emerged.

The low-budget film is called 'Innocence Of Muslims', and if clips circulating online are genuine, it shows Mohammed as a child molester and a criminal.

As you can see from the images, the production was low-budget and amateurish. The actors are (we assume) unprofessional.

In thirteen minutes of footage available online, posted by the mysterious 'Sam Bacile', Mohammed is shown to be buffoonish and idiotic. In one sequence he is shown talking to a donkey.

There are also several insulting lines about the prophet and Islam itself. An elderly woman says: "In all my young life, I have not seen such a murderous thug as Mohammed!"

Another character says about the creation of the Koran: "I will make a book for him, a mix of subversions form the Torah and subversions form the New Testament, and mix them into false verses."

Bizarrely, all the references to Mohammed and Islam were crudely dubbed over the original lines in post-production.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia, who has a small role as the mother of a young girl who is given to Mohammed to marry, told Gawker that none of the actors had any idea the film would be so controversial.

They answered a casting call for a movie called 'Desert Warriors', with Mohammed named 'Master George' in the original script. In the trailer she says "Is your Mohammed a child molester?". The line Garcia gave during filming was: "Is your God a child molester,"

"I had nothing to do really with anything," she said. "Now we have people dead because of a movie I was in. It makes me sick."

Since the deadly attack in Egypt, the whole cast released a statement to CNN saying they were misled.

"The entire cast and crew are extremely upset and feel taken advantage of by the producer. We are 100% not behind this film and were grossly misled about its intent and purpose. We are shocked by the drastic re-writes of the script and lies that were told to all involved. We are deeply saddened by the tragedies that have occurred."

It's still unclear who was actually behind "Innocence Of Muslims' as the mysterious 'Sam Bacille' could be a pseudonym.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a 55-year-old man from California, admitted to The Associated Press that he was a manager for the company that produced the film, but denied directing. However AP report that a mobile phone number they were given for Bacille was traced to the same address as Nakoula.

A man who identified himself as Bacile told news agencies on Tuesday that he'd gone into hiding. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he called himself an Israeli-American backed by Jewish donors. He described Islam as a "cancer" and said: "This is a political movie. The US lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're fighting with ideas."

Even stranger, whoever the filmmakers were may also have links to Florida Pastor Terry Jones, whose threats to publicly burn the Koran in 2010 also caused riots.

Jones told NBC that they tried to screen the film in his church as part of their "International Judge Mohammad Day", but was thwarted by technical issues.

US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans in the Libyan city of Benghazi were killed in the riots on Tuesday. It's not clear if the controversial film was solely responsible for the attacks.
