Chewbacca to get his own film

Early life of Chewie actor Peter Mayhew to be made into a movie

A new film based on the early life of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew is in development.

Director Kyle Newman, who made the 'Star Wars'-themed comedy 'Fanboys' is behind the production, currently called 'Chewie'.

It will focus on the real life events of the seven-foot three-inch aspiring actor Mayhew as he tried to juggle his work as a porter at King's College Hospital in London with becoming the iconic wookie in 'Star Wars', sidekick to galactic smuggler Han Solo.

The script, written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, is among those on the Hollywood 'black list', an annual list of unmade films considered the hottest.

Director Newman has now secured Mayhew's 'life rights' to develop the script into a film.

Mayhew, now 68, almost lost out on the role to David Prowse, who eventually became Darth Vader.

He has also said that all he had to do in his audition for the role of Chewbacca was stand up.
