Chloe Moretz: how we remade iconic Carrie blood scene

Actress says she wanted to live in the moment for cult horror remake.

‘Carrie’ star Chloe Grace Moretz says she wanted to live in the moment to recreate the cult horror’s iconic pig’s blood scene, by letting the crew surprise her with the stunt.

“I didn’t [prepare],” the 16-year-old actress told Yahoo Movies UK. “I basically told them like ‘I don’t want to know when it’s gonna happen. I don’t want a ‘3, 2, 1’. I don’t want anything like that. I literally just want to be in the moment, living it… and the blood drops.’”

The infamous scene, which saw Sissy Spacek have a bucket of blood dumped on her at a high school prom in Brian De Palma's 1976 movie, has become one of the most recognisable in horror history.

But Chloe says she wanted to achieve her own take on the gory climax, and understand “the peak” of Carrie’s character – mainly by achieving that slapped-in-the-face feeling.

“It’s not even the shock,” she boasted. “When the blood hits she’s smiling, and she’s so happy. And you know there’s that thing where it’s like when you get slapped in the face? The same expression after you get slapped is still on your face… So that’s what we kind of brought through is like, she’s smiling and as it hits she just sits there and she’s like ‘Oh my God… What just happened?’

As for the blood in question, it’s nice to know it’s actually a messy cocktail of water, food thickener, soap and colouring (“not the most delicious thing” says Chloe).

Still, at least she nailed it first time: “One. One take. Done.”

‘Carrie’, directed by Kimberly Peirce and co-starring Julianne Moore, is out in the UK 29 November 2013. Watch the amazing viral coffee shop prank for 'Carrie', below.
