Zombie movies seem to be enjoying a new lease of life. Danny Boyle's excellent 28 Days Later brought them back to life (!), while Shaun Of The Dead adopted a tongue in cheek stance. Now this remake of George A. Romero's classic shocker returns to the genre's roots...
Ana Clark (Sarah Polley) is a suburban nurse and wife who one day wakes up to find her world in tatters. Her husband has just been fatally attacked by their neighbour's little girl, and now he's battering on the bathroom door, trying to make a breakfast snack out of his wife. Ana manages to escape and soon she and a host of other 'survivors' are holed up in a local mall while news reports predict the end of the world. And then the noise begins as thousands of the undead start to congregate outside, all eager for the meat within.
Displaying a wonderfully sick sense of humour and full of in-jokes, this is the kind of solid zombie schlock fun that aficionados will relish.
Make sure you pay attention to the soundtrack, too, which, from Johnny Cash's When The Man Comes Around to the muzak playing in the mall, carries a subliminal message.
