Rom-coms come thick and fast these days but at least Definitely, Maybe approaches the genre from a different angle.
A 10-year-old child, Maya played by Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin, is at the centre of the Manhattan-set story as she's trying to cope with her parents' break up. Feeling down one day, she asks her 30-something dad Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) how he met and fell in love with her mum. Will decides to tell her the story of the three woman in his life before her birth - who respectively fit the categories girl next-door, close friend/confidante and free-spirited - but changes their names, leaving Maya to guess which one is her mother.
The movie stylishly floats from past to present with Will humorously attempting to keep the story as child-friendly as possible, despite some challenging questions from Maya, impressively played by Breslin.
Isla Fisher, who's more often known as Sacha Baron Cohen's girlfriend, proves she is genuinely talented in her role as one of the women alongside Elizabeth Banks and Rachel Weisz and Reynolds is very convincing in a movie that's a bit of a departure for him and perfect for a cosy night in.
