Oscar winner Denzel Washington plays ATF agent Doug Carlin in this dramatic action thriller with a semi-sci-fi, post-Minority Report plot.
Carlin is co-opted into a secret government unit which boasts the ability to view the past from several days away, from multiple angles, on monitors. With this device they resolve to find out who left a bomb on a Mississippi ferry, killing several hundred members of the navy and their families.
Doug falls in love with one of the terrorists' murder victims, Claire Kuchevar (Paula Patton). As luck would have it he is equipped to follow her back into the past, where she may hold the key to the catastrophe. After all, she knows Carroll Oerstadt (Jim Caviezel), a crazy guy with a crazy name who is unnervingly fond of machine guns.
Washington is typically convincing, even when playing a ridiculous character who succeeds in pursuing Oerstadt's van in a high-speed car chase, despite the fact that they are travelling on different days.
His performance combined with good support (including Val Kilmer), director Tony Scott's ambition and the atmospheric New Orleans backdrop results in a powerful film, despite the implausible sequence of events.
