Back in the '60s, Hollywood's Rock Hudson / Doris Day sex comedies were the ultimate in risqué, mainstream entertainment. Well now director Peyton Reed (Bring It On) revisits the genre for this likable flick which stars Ewan McGregor and Renée Zellweger.
Ewan plays Catcher Block, the leading writer on a popular New York men's magazine and the ultimate ladies' man, man's man, man about town. So when he's asked to interview a 'spinster' who's written a new book, he gives her the brush off. Little does he realise though that Barbara Novak's (Zellweger) book Down With Love will become 'bigger than the pill', shake up the battle of the sexes and leave Catch hopelessly enamored.
Boasting a very '60s stylised look (the sets are full of mod-cons while the driving shots make the most of their processed backgrounds), Down With Love is very much aimed at the female market but there's still enough here for the fellas to enjoy too.
McGregor is a great leading man while Zellweger comes across well as the empowered writer and Frasier star David Hyde Pierce meanwhile turns in a Grade A 'Niles-esque' performance as Catch's neurotic and lovesick boss / best friend Peter.
