In the show, McCall reached out to people in trouble, offering vigilante justice in New York through a newspaper ad which read: “Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer. 212 555 4200.”
The project is being produced by Sony Pictures, and is thought to be the first of a franchise for Washington.
Among the directors who are being talked up to take the film on include 'Drive's Nicolas Winding Refn, 'The Raid's Gareth Evans, 'Taken's Pierre Morel and 'Warrior's Gavin O'Connor.
Filming is due to start in Boston on April 8.
