Gerard Depardieu is collecting passports like Pokemon.

After controversially quitting France over a now-scrapped 'supertax' of 75% on those earning over €1 million (£857,000), he's become an honourary citizen of the Belgian area of Estaimpuis.

The actor moved to Belgium last year, renouncing his French passport and trading barbs with both the Prime Minister Jean-Marc Aryault and the President Francois Hollande.

He now considers himself a 'citizen of the world' and says that he intends to own seven passports in all to avoid the need for visas, and has reportedly applied for an Algerian one.

Russian premier Vladimir Putin was among the first to offer the famous bon viveur citizenship in January this year.

“We are glad you made your nest in Nechin,” said Estaimpuis' Mayor Daniel Senesael. “Gerard, Estaimpuis loves you.”

Depardieu then held court at a 200-person barbeque reception, and called the whole controversial business with his homeland 'a huge misunderstanding'.

“I've never left! I refuse to be trapped within borders. It is completely different. I'm a free man. I feel at home everywhere in Europe,” he told Le Figaro Magazine.

He added that he 'still loves' France and 'lives there regularly', having recently wrapped on a film about football due out around the time of the 2014 World Cup.

That said, his historic home in Paris is currently on the market for €50 million.

Speaking about his famous love of gastronomy, he felt compelled to drop in another couple of veiled insults at his adversaries in French government.

He told the magazine that he would serve Aryault 'a cold fish with vinaigrette' and Hollande 'a chicken casserole with two slices of lard'.
