Desolation of Smaug star Fry has never read The Hobbit
Actor admits he has a bit of a gap in his reading
Stephen Fry has revealed that he's never read 'The Hobbit'.
The actor, who plays the Master of Laketown in the forthcoming sequel 'The Desolation of Smaug', said that he's only skimmed the parts of the book that his character features in.
Better still, he knew nothing at all of his character before getting on a flight to New Zealand to begin filming the blockbuster with director Peter Jackson.

“I usually read scripts. But 'The Hobbit', I'm not sure I should say this, but I've never read 'The Hobbit',” he told comedian Richard Herring for his Leicester Square podcast.
“And on the plane to New Zealand, which is a long flight, you'd have thought I'd have time.
“It's something about a hole in the ground where a hobbit lived. My character was called The Master of Laketown, so I thought, there's a lot of this. There's a search function [on the iPad], so I just put in 'The Master' and it went to all the bits I was in.

“I thought, 'that seems like a reasonable part', put the iPad down and read another book. So to this day I haven't read it, but I am really looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.”
How the film's crazy fans might react to the news remains to be seen...
'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' is out on December 13.
