Downton star to play Cinderella

Disney finds its new star, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Downton Abbey star Lily James has been chosen to play Cinderella for the Mouse House's forthcoming live-action take on the fairytale.

James, who plays Lady Rose MacClare and has scored roles in 'Wrath of the Titans' and 'Secret Diary of a Call Girl', will play the put-upon step-daughter opposite Cate Blanchett's evil stepmother.

'One Hour Photo' and 'Never Let Me Go' helmsman Mark Romanek departed the production at the beginning of the year, and it is now being directed by Kenneth Branagh.

In the frame to play the prince is Richard Madden, according to reports, currently starring in HBO's 'Game of Thrones'.

It's not yet known the angle Branagh will take on the source material.

It will continue the Hollywood obsession with fairytale adaptations, following the likes of Bryan Singer's 'Jack The Giant Slayer' and last year's 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.

And then there's the small matter of Robert Stromberg's take on the 'Sleeping Beauty' story, 'Maleficent', starring Angelina Jolie, Juno Temple, Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley.

That's due out in July 2014.
