The broadcaster of The Golden Globes ceremony has apologised after actor Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease was presented as a “Fun Fact” during the red-carpet part of the show.

According to Variety, the E! Network regrets the “insensitive" on-screen graphic about the 52-year-old ‘Back To The Future’ star, who had been nominated for Best Actor in a miniseries or Television Film at the glitzy awards show.

“We regret the insensitive classification of Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s diagnosis during our Eonline live stream,” a spokesperson said.

“We understand the serious nature of the disease and sincerely apologise.”

‘Spin City’ star Fox semi-retired from acting in 2000, after his condition worsened. He has since become a prominent advocate for researching a cure for the degenerative disease, founding the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2010.

After viewers spotted a similar graphic during the E! show - detailing how Hollywood legend Robert Redford was “stricken with polio as a child” – the gaffes led to a series of Twitter memes, with users inserting similar inappropriate messages into the Fun Fact box.
