We should make it clear, before any terrible mistakes get made, that this a re-release of the original Hong Kong horror film; it is not the abysmal Jessica Alba remake which, despite the undisputed charms of Ms Alba, should be avoided like a particularly virulent strain of the bubonic plague.
Having got that proviso out of the way, this effort from way back in 2002 is a very neat little film. In the same mould of fellow Asian chillers Ring and The Grudge, The Eye provides further proof that it is best to look East for movies that genuinely make the skin crawl.
The plot revolves around a young blind woman (Angelica Lee) whose cornea transplant allows her to see the souls of the dead, some of whom are less than pleasant. In time-honoured horror style, the intrepid young lady journeys to find the origins of her new eye.
The shocks, especially in the first half, are expertly handled by directors Oxide and Danny Pang. However, as is often the case with ghost stories, the initial creepiness and suspense is replaced to an extent by the intricacies of the plot as the story progresses.
That said, The Eye is a superior horror film, again proving that genuine shocks come more from what you imagine than what you see. Though this re-released DVD is a bit disappointing on the extras front, containing just a selection of trailers from the theatrical release.
