I ummed and erred whether to give this 2 or 3 stars overall, as for the first hour or so, this film was quite good. The humour was good fun, the action scenes were exciting enough (the scene with the London Eye was genuinely tense) and the visual effects were quite spectacular. However, in the last few minutes when (SPOILER) the world is saved (okay so not much of a SPOILER), something goes wrong.
It is hard to say if it was a timing issue or a focal point issue. It may just be that Earth's potential nemesis remains too nebulous. It may be that the aversion of doom (not the evil Doctor von Doom) is inadequately explained and left as something of a Deus ex machina, but at the end I was feeling "Is that it?"
A moment which should have been moving just felt mawkish and the tension just dissipated rather than being released in a cathartic moment of victory.
