I love comic book movies…there, I admit it, I am biased. But I have given some negative reviews about comic book movies in the past. So don’t hold it against me when I say that I enjoyed this movie. I know it has been slated across the board, but I think that’s by critics taking it too seriously. It’s a comic book action adventure movie for God’s sake…not a masterpiece!
Rise of the Silver Surfer follows our favourite foursome as they take on a mysterious being from another planet. As the title suggests, he is the Silver Surfer, although his real name is a lot less cool, as you will find out if you see this movie. He is here to prepare the way for Galactus who feeds on planets and wants to eat our tasty Earth.
The special effects were good. The CGI on the Surfer was fine except when up close. He just couldn’t act. All the other actors were good though, but I dunno what they were thinking with Jessica Alba’s overly blond hair. Yeah, Sue Storm was blond, but it didn’t look that ridiculous.
The story was nice and simple, they got it right in that regard. There were also the usual little funny moments mingled into the action as you would expect from Marvel movies. It even had a few jabs at itself. The first Fantastic Four movie was criticised for so much advertising and product placement. This one sees very little of that going on. When Johnny mentions getting an endorsement deal with an airline, Sue tells him they’ve done enough of that. Later when he produces new suits, covered in advertisements. These are shot down by the rest of the group.
The Fantastic Four have always been the most human of superheroes in my opinion and this movie shows that. Susan’s plans for a romantic wedding to Richard keep getting interrupted every time they are called to duty. Susan and Richard consider giving up their adventures as superheroes to lead a quiet “normal” life. All four heroes must consider what their powers mean to them and how they choose to deal with the responsibilities they have unwittingly gained.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is entertaining and doesn’t require much brain power.
Go see it if you want a simple, fun movie.
