DVD Review

Thanks to the phenomenal success of Star Wars the world went sci-fi nuts in the late '70s and early '80s. Every studio was churning out similar space adventures or regurgitating old classics like Flash Gordon, yes as in, "Flash, ahh-ahh, he saved every one of us!"

The cult sci-fi, with the killer Queen soundtrack, returns to DVD to celebrate its 25th anniversary. This adventure, based on the original comic book adventures of the former New York Jets quarterback, finds Flash (Sam J Jones), Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and Professor Hans Zarkoff (Topol) heading-off to the furthest reaches of the universe to try and find out who, or what, is toying with the Earth. However, what they find is the Kingdom of Mongo ruled through fear by the sinister Ming The Merciless (Max Von Sydow). Can the Earthlings unite the various princesses and other factions, to take-on their oppressor, or is the Earth doomed?

This sci-fi romp from 1980 also stars Timothy Dalton, Peter Wyngarde and Blue Peter's Peter Duncan (!) and boasts classic lines from Brian Blessed including the now legendary, "Gordon's alive?!" Director Mike Hodges' (Get Carter) lustrous big screen adventure is a must have for Flash fans, In fact for everyone who enjoyed the film first time round or during it's occasional TV showings.

This silver anniversary pack comes in a new limited edition steelbook packaging, audio commentaries from director Hodges and Blessed (a hoot!); Interviews with Hodges and the cast, an episode of the original 1940s serial 'Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe', a photo slideshow and, of course, original Queen theatrical trailer.
