The new Jim Carrey-Tea Leoni remake of Fun With Dick And Jane offers the chance of a welcome reissue for this long-forgotten 1977 original, starring Jane Fonda and George Segal. The film follows an upper-middle class couple as they unexpectedly lose their comfortable jobs and, without missing a beat, switch to crime after becoming the unwitting beneficiaries of a hold-up.
Desperate to maintain the lifestyle to which they've become accustomed, their ambition rises with each job. The comedy is lightly handled by Fonda and Segal - two pros who could do this stuff in their sleep - and the whole is enjoyably amoral, even if some of the humour seems somewhat stereotypical thirty years down the line. All in all an amiable character comedy, with dashes of anarchy and slapstick.
This comedy remake stars Jim Carrey stars as Dick, a husband who has everything; a high paid job, a big house and a wife to match. But after some 'creative accountancy' methods are rumbled, the company he works for goes bust. Dick cops much of the blame and his life goes into financial freefall. Faced with finding a new way to support their lavish lifestyle after losing everything from the lawn to their plasma TV, he and wife Jane (Tea Leoni) turn to crime, albeit in a nice, polite middle-class way.
Carrey has moved on from the face-contorting funny man of Mask and Ace Ventura, but is still idiosyncratic and there are flashes of his brilliance here, Leoni, though, steals money from the rich and the show from the megastar. She matches him gag for gag, creates her own laughs, and more than holds her own. It's not littered with gags but there are funny moments, the best being the effect their illegal antics has on their sex life.
The original 1977 hit stared George Segal and Jane Fonda, and the story was easily adapted into a modern day format resulting in a lightly amusing movie for a cosy evening on the sofa.
