Die Another Day and X-Men 2 proved Halle Berry had a taste for action while Monster's Ball highlighted the former beauty queen's versatility. The Oscar winner stretches her acting ability further in a taut supernatural thriller?
Dr. Miranda Grey (Berry) is a highly respected criminal psychologist, happily married to the warden (Charles S. Dutton) of the institution where she works. A bit of shock then when she wakes up as an inmate and is told that she has brutally murdered her husband. Unable to remember anything, Miranda's further traumatised by visits from the ghost of a young girl.
Produced by the same folks behind Thirteen Ghosts and The House On Haunted Hill, Gothika is a spine tingling spookfest. Berry gives a suitably startled performance as the good Doctor and Robert Downey Jr. turns on the charm as a former friend and therapist while director, Mathieu Kassovitz lays on the atmospherics, shamelessly utilising any clichés that may work in his favour.
