What can be said about the greatest of modern musicals? An entertaining plot, great performances and, of course, timeless songs make Grease a humdinger of a movie. It was released in 1978, just after John Travolta had made it big with Saturday Night Fever, and propelled the actor, along with co-star Olivia Newton-John, to superstardom.
In the 50's, Rydell High is run by a teenage boy gang, The T-Birds, who are led by Danny Zuko (Travolta) and Kenickie (Jeff Conaway). Their female counterparts, The Pink Ladies, fronted by Rizzo (Stockard Channing), follow the lads, wide-eyed with admiration. Danny doesn't just have rival school gang, The Scorpions, to worry about, but also the fact that his summer infatuation, Sandy (Newton-John), has just started at Rydell. If his peers find out that he's a secret romantic, Danny's reputation as a hardman could be in tatters.
Summer Nights and You're The One That I Want are the most celebrated tunes here, but each song's wonderfully uplifting. Even the minor roles, like Vince Fontaine (Ed Byrnes) and Principal McGee (Eva Arden) are delightfully performed and totally memorable. It may be simple, lightweight entertainment but Grease is extremely well-made and will cast a beam of sunlight upon the life of even the most gloomy cynic.
This sing-along version comes a with slew of extras including Rydell High Sing-Along feature (great for parties), interactive packaging with You're the One that I Want music chip, The making of Grease, 11 deleted/extended scenes, The Moves Behind the Music, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John 'Grease Day USA' interviews and much more.
