After Ben Affleck landed the role of Batman, anyone and everyone has chimed in with their opinions… but despite remaining tight-lipped, George Clooney finally reveals what he thinks.
In recent weeks, we've seen numerous celebrities (and even fellow Batmen) offer up their opinions on whether Ben Affleck is the right fit for DC's Dark Knight. And while most of Hollywood has been eager to congratulate him, it seems it's an altogether more contentious casting amongst the fans. But one of the few voices to remain silent on the matter is former-Batman, George Clooney. That is, until now…
In an interview with Empire Magazine, the best-forgotten Batman chipped in with some well-placed comments about Ben Affleck's casting…
"I am the least qualified person to comment on anyone playing the role of Batman," he laughed, "since I so terribly destroyed the part."
And while that's easily the greatest response yet, Clooney also had something a little more serious to add.
"I tend to look at it like this - let's just see what the movie is before everyone starts beating him up. He is a smart man, he knows what he is doing."
Not exactly an endorsement (but certainly not a criticism), it's a very diplomatic answer from the man who's perhaps best known for his nippled bat-suit. But while Clooney certainly isn't the greatest Batman who's ever lived, I have to admit… I wholeheartedly agree with him.
I mean, let's face it - whoever follows in Christian Bale's footsteps is going to have a tough time when it comes to the obvious comparisons. And we won't know whether or not Affleck comes up trumps until we eventually get to watch the movie. So while he might not be the ideal Batman you've always dreamed of, perhaps it's time to admit defeat and give Affleck a chance.
Unfortunately, while Clooney is willing to give Affleck the benefit of the doubt, the same can't be said of the hordes of Batman fans who consider 'Batman & Robin' to be an abomination - a homo-erotic, tragic mess that almost killed off the Batman franchise. And did we mention the nippled bat-suit?
Of course, that's all in the past… and it's great to see that he still has a sense of humour about it. But perhaps we should take notice and give Ben Affleck a chance. After all, it can't be as bad as 'Batman & Robin', right?
