Or could it be havoc wreaked by more than one monster?

'Dark Knight' writer David S. Goyer has revealed that, in line with rumours online, there is likely to be multiple monsters in the Gareth Edwards-directed reboot.

Goyer worked for a time on the script and dropped the hints during a question and answer session on Reddit.

“Re: Godzilla,” he wrote, “I only did 4 weeks on it and there've been a ton of other writers that came after me. But I believe there will be other monsters, yes. There were at least 2 others when I was mucking about with it.”

Despite the previous foray into Godzilla territory (the 1998 Roland Emmerich version) being roundly disliked by fans and critics, this version is shaping up well.

The impressive cast includes 'Kick-Ass' star Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role, along with Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston.

It's due out in May, 2014.
