Is it a bird? A plane? No, it's just Will Smith looking at the box office success of recent superhero movies and thinking 'I'll have some of that.'"
Except, that while it became yet another hit movie for Smith it was critically savaged. The main criticism that was levelled at it was that it seemed to be more than the one joke premise of Smith being a drunk, foul-mouthed superhero promised in the trailer.
The actual film had the luxury of a twist that was not spoiled in this internet gossip-led world, and a tonal shift of story towards the end that had surprising pathos. But for many, character development got in the way of Smith snarling at people and beating them up.
Let's hope the DVD and Blu-ray version of the film, which centres on a misunderstood superhero and his attempts to find his place in the world, will find a more appreciative audience.
And with Smith coasting on his considerable charisma, and Jason Bateman once again impressing in a supporting comedic role (will someone please give him a lead part soon) it should ensure repeat viewings.
The DVD extras include several featurettes, as well as the original and extended cut. The Blu-Ray release also has an on-set visual diary feature.
