More Henson than Harryhausen, more Labyrinth than Pan's Labyrinth, del Toro lets down the side with a breathtakingly dull premise and lacklustre direction.
That said, Pearlman alone is worth a fiver on a wet Wednesday afternoon and he gives his all with an assured turn from an actor destined to be Chief Orc (or whatever) in the upcoming Hobbit movies del Toro is preparing.
Pearlman apart, there is little on offer here acting wise, very few one liners of note and incredibly lame bad guys.
Del Toro's attention to creature detail borders on the obsessive and the whole show becomes somewhat laboured around the 20 min mark as row after row of Henson-esque animatronics clutter the screen
Del Toro and co should surely quit while they're ahead (just!) as Hellboy 2: The Golden Army sadly fails to give it's audience the horn.
