Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz Jack Black and Jude Law all play their part in this feelgood transatlantic rom-com from Nancy Meyers.
Winslet and Diaz play Iris and Amanda respectively whose love lives, on opposite sides of the Atlantic, have both reached rock bottom. They decide to swap addresses for the Christmas holidays after coming into contact with each other through a home swapping website. Their luck with love then changes for the better. Iris meets film soundtrack composer Miles (Jack Black) when she moves to Nancy's gargantuan LA abode while Amanda is swept off her feet by Iris's brother (Jude Law) in the quaint English countryside.
Jack Black, unsurprisingly, dispenses with some of the funniest lines while also portraying the necessary sensitivity. Diaz reprises some of her There's Something About Mary glory albeit in a far more subdued manner that befits a more mature, gentle film.
Jude Law is the almost obligatory English gent (is someone finally giving Hugh Grant a bit of competition?) and all combine to deliver the Something's Gotta Give writer's dialogue with panache in a film that plays with the genre's format in a refreshingly unique manner.
