While much American horror is caught up in reviving well known scary characters or reverting to clichés as if the refreshingly intelligent Scream never happened, Korea offers something a bit different. The monster movie is given a modern spin by Bong Joon Ho.
The Host is a mutant monster crawling from the Han river and devouring its way across town, stopping only to kidnap the daughter of the central family. But it's no ordinary monster movie, as soon becomes apparent. The Park family's attempts to reclaim their daughter are thwarted not only by the beast itself, but also by their government, which is trying to contain a deadly virus they believe to be inhabiting the monster.
Just like the old monster flicks supposedly containing deeper meaning, many believe The Host alludes to the the North/South Korea divide and it was partially inspired by a notorious case when an American military official guilty of polluting the Han river couldn't be prosecuted under Korean law. However, in addition to all the serious undercurrents, at the end of the day you have a rampaging monster and some intentionally humorous moments that contribute to a spectacular, entertaining movie.
And there are a Host (sorry) of special features too on this 2-disc set. You're treated to deleted scenes, making of, audition tapes, exploring the characters, the creature making process, creature stills gallery, monster gag reel, Bong Joon-ho's direction, puppet animatronix, designing the creature, interviews with key crew members and more.
