Following rumours that Emilia Clarke, Brie Larson and Margot Robbie are testing for the role of Sarah Connor in Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor's upcoming Terminator 5, names have begun circulating for the role of John Connor.

In-demand actor Tom Hardy is thought to be at the top of Taylor's wish list for the part, though discussions haven't yet taken place. Battleship actor Taylor Kitsch and X-Men's Nicholas Hoult are also rumoured to be in the running.

Garrett Hedlund and Boyd Holbrook, meanwhile, are apparently in contention to play a younger version of John's father, Kyle Reese.

The fifth film in the franchise is expected to be set in the present day and will see Arnold Schwarzenegger return to his iconic role as “a Terminator robot in a time-spanning story that sees him tasked to protect Sarah Connor as she grows up,” according to THR.

Slated for a 2015 release, screen tests for the film are thought to begin next week.
