'The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug' promises to show us a glimpse of Smaug the dragon, something that we're all looking forward to as avid fans of the world of Middle Earth. However, to say that Smaug's debut is the only one that is eagerly awaited in the sequel to 'An Unexpected Journey' is frankly untrue. There are several characters of J.R.R Tolkein's creation that will be brought to life soon and personally I can't wait to see them all.
Bard the Bowman
Those familiar with the story will know that Bard, played by actor Luke Evans, has an important part in the trilogy. Bard is an excellent archer, and is a man of Laketown, who organised the defences against Smaug when he attacked. Luke Evans is an actor on the up, with several projects coming his way at the moment. I can't wait to see how he handles Bard.
Master of Laketown
Everyone loves Stephen Fry, and I personally can't wait to see him finally make his entrance into Middle Earth as the Master of Laketown. He's described as a greedy man, but not undeserving of his position in terms of intelligence and charisma. So it sounds like Stephen is the perfect person to play him then, as the hose of QI is sure to fit in some witty and hilarious lines, as always.
Tauriel is an experienced warrior, and head of the Elven guard of Mirkwood and also completely made up for the film. Yes, that's right; Evangeline Lilly's female ass kicker has been created by Jackson specifically for the film and doesn't feature in the books. This appears to be a step made to readdress the glaring fact that The Hobbit doesn't really have female characters. Because of this I'm excited to see what Tauriel can bring to the film, girl power and all that.
Beorn's role in the film remains a mystery so far, but I'm most excited about him. With Gollum, Azog and Smaug excitingly filling up the CGI and Motion Capture ranks, it's easy to forget that Beorn is a man that can shape shift into a bear. How cool is that. It remains to be seen how the film will handle actor Mikael Persbrandt's transformation from already formidable man to bear. But I bet it'll be awesome.
Yes the picture of that fearsome looking Orc that we thought we'd see in the first film will finally come into fruition as Bolg; the son of Azog, played by Conan Stevens will appear in Desolation of Smaug. It's been hinted that Bolg, like his father, will have an extended role, and that he'll be a sadistic torturer in the dungeons of Dol-Guldur, excellent.
Which characters are you most looking forward to seeing?
