This latest Adam Sandler vehicle is like stepping back into a world of dated sitcoms, where the cheaper the laugh the more relentlessly it's pursued.
Sandler (Chuck) and Kevin James (Larry) are firemen, the former a womanising hedonist, the latter a widowed father who's terrified his single status will deny his children any benefits in the event of his death. So Chuck decides to do what any best friend would do. He agrees to pretend the pair are a gay couple. After a story about them appears in the paper, they have to convince the sceptical authorities that theirs is a genuine romance.
The major problem with I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is that, for all the tolerance it preaches at the close, the vast majority of the gags manage to be both offensive and corny. For instance, in one scene Chuck and Larry are enjoying a shower at the fire station with their colleagues, all together in the altogether in a communal shower when someone drops a bar of soap. And, ho ho ho, would you believe it: No one dares to pick it up. That said, the team behind this are nothing if not slick at producing this type of comedy. So if telegraphed gags and story lines keep you happy, you'll be happy. You could do a lot worse.
There's plenty of extras here, including two audio commentaries (one with the stars, the other with director) plus deleted scenes and sprinkling of featurettes.
