Fortunately this film came along at a time when British film producers decided to give up the post-Four Weddings formulaic romcom thing.
Having said that I Want Candy does feature a token American star, Carmen Electra, as a porn star (presumably no real stretch there).
Joe (Tom Riley) and his mate, the neurotic Baggy (Tom Burke), are no different from anybody else. And though their arty film teacher (Mackenzie Crook) is loath to fill them with misplaced confidence, the two lads from Leatherhead journey to London, convinced that they are sitting on a script that will bring them both fortune and fame.
Needless to say, no one else agrees. Until, that is, they meet a producer, Doug (Eddie Marsan), who, incredibly, is almost as desperate as them. So much so that he offers to fund their movie - as long as they secure the services of Candy Fiveways (Electra), who is the world's foremost adult movie star. The pair track Candy down and persuade her to sign up for their film. A film whose adult scenes have to be shot in the living room of Joe's parents.
Obviously it doesn't require the brain to be engaged, which is just as well as its rude comedy is perfect post-pub entertainment for many young males.
There are a few extra guffaws to be had among the outtakes and deleted scenes.
