She's starred in a few films before now but "I Want Candy" could well be the movie Carmen Electra was born to make. The Ealing comedy sees Carmen playing Candy Fiveways, the hottest porn star on the planet - and the woman aspiring movie makers Joe (Tom Riley) and Baggy (Tom Burke) have promised gangster Doug (Eddie Marsan) will be the star of their new movie. So Doug sets up the financing and now all the pair have to do is persuade the world's most famous adult entertainer that she should join the cast of a no-budget student flick filming in Leatherhead?

Despite a budget seemingly similar to Joe and Baggy's, director Stephen Surjik has actually managed to create quite an amusing little film here. But don't be fooled by all the quotes describing this is the "English American Pie" - it's entertaining but won't have you rolling in the aisles. The script relies heavily on innuendo and embarrassing situations (imagine your parents doing the wild thing while you're trapped in their en suite) but the whole thing feels just about innocent enough to carry it off.

The cast do a capable job although whoever thought of casting Jimmy Carr as a video store geek needs a serious talking to. But if the truth be told its Carmen most people will be going to see and the good news is that a) she actually brings some charm and warmth to Candy and b) she does spend much of the film in her underwear.

"I Want Candy" is a classic example of a low budget Brit flick film that knows its limits - it may not exactly leave a lasting impression but is likely to raise a few laughs.

Countless people believe, for no reason whatsoever, that they have a decent film in them. In that respect Joe (Tom Riley) and his mate, the neurotic Baggy (Tom Burke), are no different from anybody else. And though their arty film teacher (Mackenzie Crook) is loath to fill them with misplaced confidence, the two lads from Leatherhead journey to London, convinced that they are sitting on a script that will bring them both fortune and fame.

Needless to say, no one else agrees. Until, that is, they meet a producer, Doug (Eddie Marsan), who, incredibly, is almost as desperate as them. So much so that he offers to fund their movie - as long as they secure the services of Candy Fiveways (Carmen Electra), who is the world's foremost adult movie star.

It says much for the absurd premise of the film that Joe and Baggy, neither of whom have any experience nor, come to that, any contacts in the business, track down Candy Fiveways and persuade her to sign up for their film. A film whose adult scenes have to be shot in the living room of Joe's parents.

It shouldn't work, of course. And yet such is its post-pub charm that I Want Candy succeeds in overcoming its excuse for a plot, mainly thanks to the quality of the acting and some engagingly daft interplay between the film's protagonists, neither of whom should have to go too far in search of work again.
