Director Jim Sheridan is responsible for some cracking movies and how he's never managed to actually win an Oscar is a matter of some debate. Over the last fifteen years this Irish filmmaker has bought us some powerful films and this latest release is no exception.

In America centres on an Irish family as they try and make a go of their new lives in New York City. The father (Paddy Considine) drives a cab while preparing for acting auditions, mum (Samantha Morton) waits tables instead of teaching while one of their two daughters (Sarah Bolger) documents the whole thing on her video camera. Her younger sibling, Emma (they are real sisters and both give outstanding performances) is constantly by her side, as we watch the family pursue their American dream.

Based on autobiographical material - Sheridan wrote the screenplay with his daughters - this film acts as both a warning and a welcome for anyone tempted to up sticks and relocate to the Big Apple. On the one hand scary and overwhelming, on the other exciting and full of potential. Something that can also be said of Jim Sheridan himself.
