Is the only thing sisters Rose and Maggie have in common their shoe size?
Elder sister Rose (Toni Collette) is a successful attorney, but Maggie is without a job and after being ejected from the family home (again!) arrives at Rose's apartment unannounced. After committing a heinous act that could end the pair's relationship permanently, she heads off to Florida to find her grandmother, Ella, who she believed dead. As Maggie starts to find her way in life Rose quits her job and looks for love. But they both realise something is still missing and Ella could be their one chance to find it.
Director Hanson largely spends his films examining relationships. In the past it's been between cops in LA Confidential, rappers in 8 Mile and teachers and students in The Wonder Boys. Based on the bestselling novel, In Her Shoes looks at two sisters, but plays it more for laughs than tears. It could be just another rom-com, but thanks to the assured female leads - even with several of those typical 'if only real life was like that' touches - and a crisp script, the plot drives along with enough high and lows to make it much more than a 'chick flick'.
The older cast members at the retirement complex, lead by Shirley Maclaine, provide plenty of gags and round out a film that's a great way to spend two hours with curled up on the sofa.
The DVD comes with plenty of extras to enjoy including three featurettes (one all about shoes!), an alternate opening sequence and an Easter egg to discover.
