Ian McKellen And Patrick Stewart Explain Why They're Such Good Mates

“I just want to give him a hug at times!”

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, who play Xavier and Magneto in the upcoming ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, have the internet’s favourite bromance.

The British thesps have dominated cyberspace in recent times thanks to a long running series of hilarious selfies, taken mainly in bowler hats.

They’re such good pals that Sir Ian even married Patrick and fiancée Sunny Ozell - a moment obviously documented on Twitter.

But why are these two acting legends such good pals? We got James MaCavoy and Michael Fassbender, who play younger versions of Xavier and Magneto in ‘Future Past’, to ask them.

Watch the duo explain the secrets of their friendship in the rather sweet video above.

“Both our differences and our similarities,” explains Patrick. “Ian is a grammar school boy, educated at Cambridge. I’m a secondary modern boy who left at 15. He’s a gay man. I’m a straight man. Those are the contrasts. But both of us are passionate about Shakespeare and being in the theatre and we went to the RSC to learn our jobs… and we are mutant superheroes!”

After some gentle ribbing Patrick’s lack of hair, Sir Ian was even more effusive about his co-star. “I love Patrick! He’s a lovable man, a sweet man. He has a stern exterior, he plays these very powerful characters, but he’s just as frail as the rest of us and I just want to give him a hug at times!”

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is directed by Bryan Singer and co-stars Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and many more.

The plot sees the elder Xavier and Magneto send Jackman’s Wolverine back to the 1970s to stop Bolivar Trask designing mutant killing robots called sentinels that end up wiping out most of humanity.

The film is released in the UK on 22 May 2014.
