Juno is a very enjoyable comedy about a high school girl dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. I wont go into the details of the plot but suffice to say it is very well done. With that said, I do not believe it lives up to the hype surrounding it. Though it is certainly one of the better movies this year, there are several flaws that prevent the film from being truly excellent.
Plus 1: The Acting
All the main actors do an excellent job portraying their characters. Ellen Page is especially talented and believable.
Plus 2: The Story
Well written, with a great mix of comedy and drama; it also avoids being predictable.
Gripe 1: The Soundtrack
My biggest issue with the movie is the sound track. A great soundtrack can suck the viewer into a film, enhancing the mood and the depth of the viewers experience. Cameron Crowe excels at creating great ones and Braffs Garden State is a recent example of one film that does it well. Juno, on the other hand, has a grating soundtrack that irritated me throughout the course of the film and detracted from my overall immersion. The movie is riddled with indie rock songs that are fairly inaccessible and though they may be something that Juno would listen to, I would guess that they are not liked by the general public.
Gripe 2: Junos Lingo
Cody tries too hard to make Junos lines sound cool or hip and it seems as though she doesnt have a great grasp of how teens speak. Where Superbad did an excellent job of mimicking conversations of an average 18 year old, Juno contains some wince moments in which the character says something that no one her age would ever say.
Final say:
Go see, but lower your expectations first. Though it has its detractions, there is a reason that it is getting the buzz it does.
