A stoner gets a girl pregnant, and then clumsily fails at every attempt to be grown up about the situation. That wouldn't seem like an obvious premise for the biggest surprise hit of 2007 but that it was.
If the hype of the film got too much for you first time out you should give it a second chance. Because now that the hype has settled you can see why it gathered so much buzz.
Yes, it's flabby running time doesn't do it any favours - the sudden trip to Las Vegas is utterly pointless - but the chemistry between the leads is utterly endearing, and it's credit to writer/director Jud Apatow that he doesn't just let the film happily coasts on their charm, injecting some dour cynicism to the proceedings.
And it's that sort of anarchic spirit that frequents the DVD - most notably the In Search of Ben Stone feature, which is a mockmentary on how the part got passed around Hollywood before landing to Seth Rogen.
James Franco, Michael Cera, Justin Long and Orlando Bloom all make fun of themselves - some more successful than others (Bloom struggles to convince even as himself) - in this witty look at Hollywood egos.
Definitely one to add to the DVD collection
