Much was expected from Lion From Lambs. You had Robert Redford directing and starring, Tom Cruise attempting to out-thesp Meryl Streep, and the promise of an in-depth look at three separate stories focusing on the war in Iraq was a compelling one.
However, despite a few highly charged moments, it never quite reaches its promise. Apart from a few brief action scenes in the two-soldiers-stranded-in-the-middle-of-nowhere section of the story, the majority of the film takes place indoors, whether it's Robert Redford's college professor teaching a blasé and apathetic student or Tom Cruise's cocky Senator playing cat and mouse with Streep's seasoned journalist.
And what you get in these scenes is talking. A lot of it. Which doesn't have to be a bad thing as a lot of important points are raised - unfortunately, though, Redford struggles to add urgency and some visual zip to the stage-bound conversations.
Which only adds to the feeling that you are watching a very long play.
