Set on the coasts of Brazil around Bahia and produced by City of God director, Walter Salles, Lower City tracks a trio of friends caught in a love triangle.
Childhood friends Deco and Naldinho search for love and a direction in life. They scratch out a living by hustling deals from their motor boat and running cargo trips until their lives are given new vigour when they meet a stripper, Karinna, who hitches a ride with them to find work in Salvador. The two have always looked out for each other, but events in Salvador force them apart. Soon they reunite as friends and settle on being a threesome. However, Deco and Naldinho's attempts to win Karinna for themselves see them thrown into battle, leading to jealousy and deception as their desire become obsessive. Seeing no successful conclusion, the three part, but are interminably drawn back to each other.
On it's surface this story echoes the tones of Truffaut's classic, Jules et Jim. However, this is a film cut from the cloth that has given us City of God, Amores Perros and Carandiru. Consequently, expect an urban, gritty,fast-paced script and strong plot that delivers a visual storm. The director hails from the setting and has brought some of the sharp nuances of life in this heavily African-populated region. The story demands hot and horny attitude and the movie delivers in a rapturous and exciting way as it races through 97 minutes that will leave you exhausted, yet exhilarated.
Sexy, tenacious and tough.
