The versatile Johnny Depp takes on the role of John Wilmot, a debauched 17th century Earl and notorious, but well respected, poet and author. Had Wilmot been around today, he'd be known as a bit of a playboy due to his sexual antics and fondness of living the high life. As such, he was also a source for much gossip.
Wilmot, it seems, had friends in high places in the form of Charles II (John Malkovich). His satirical play, based on his friend, was one of the factors leading to his downfall. Exiled from Britain as a result, he takes with him a wannabe actress, Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), whom he developed a fondness for. But his life soon goes into freefall after contracting a crippling illness which eats away at his body and mind.
Depp, once again, gives a spotless performance, Malkovich is chilling in his portrayal as the King. However, Morton, one of Britain's most talented young actresses, is sadly underused. Despite this, it marked a promising start for debut director Laurence Dunmore, who boldly accepted the invitation to recount the story of one of England's forgotten cads.
