LEGO movie actually happening

Danish building blocks will somehow become a major animated film

Prepare yourselves for 'LEGO: The Movie'. That’s right: Hollywood is making an animated film based on those world famous Danish building blocks.

The 3D project will be brought to the big screen by Warner Bros., who have a set a 28 February 2014 release date.

The film may sound baffling, but some good top notch talent is attached. ‘21 Jump Street’ and ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are joint-helming. They wrote the screenplay with Dan and Kevin Hageman.

Intriguingly, the plot is said to feature some classic and some new characters from the LEGO universe, but we don't know more than that.

Can anyone actually name a classic LEGO character? Perhaps the film will draw inspiration from some of themed sets from the company, like ‘Lego City’, ‘Lego Space’ and ‘Lego Castle’. Older kids will doubtless hope ‘Lego Technic’ is involved.

'Robot Chicken’ helmer Chris McKay is apparently the third director onboard. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing the film, which is already in production.

LEGO has already branched out into highly successful licensed video games, such as ‘LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ and ‘LEGO Indiana Jones: The original Adventures’.

If you think the project sounds bizarre, remember that the similarly strange ‘Battleship’ movie (based on the table top boardgame) has already become a box office hit, having made nearly £80 million in foreign territories alone.
