Here we go again! After countless re-entries into the box office chart, prompting cinema chains to re-release the film over and again with updated sing-a-long screenings, it feels as though the DVD has arrived far too soon. Alas we shouldn’t forget Christmas is approaching and indeed this makes the perfect credit-crunching present for young and old alike.

Taking the lead from the West End stage musical formed of ABBA songs, the film well and truly brings the classic tunes into the hearts and minds of a younger audience with what is in actual fact a rather loose and minimal story-line.
We join Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her friends on the eve of her wedding day to Sky (Dominic Cooper). Having grown-up on a Greek island in a wild and passionate single-parent household, Sophie daren’t mention the word ‘dad’ around her fiercely protective mother, played by Meryl Streep. However Sophie is desperate to have her real father present to walk her down the aisle.
Much amusement ensues as Sophie goes about contacting the three possible fathers (cue ABBA song ‘I Have a Dream’). Meanwhile her mother Donna is joined on the island by her best girlfriends who have a plan to release the inner sex-goddess in their downbeat friend and give her a new lease of life (cue ‘Dancing Queen’).
When the men arrive on the island Sophie is determined to arrange alone time in the hope of discovering the true identity of her father (cue ‘Our Last Summer’), but eventually the seed is planted, and two of the potential fathers request to walk Sophie down the aisle (cue ‘Voulez-Vous’).
While Sophie and Sky decide to spend more time discovering the world instead of marrying each other, Donna vows to live in the moment, and promptly marries one of the suitors.

Perhaps it’s thanks to the involvement of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and the all-star cast which includes comedy-style singing from Pierce Brosnan making this one of the most loved films of recent times.
