Even by David Lynch's standards Mulholland Drive is a film that confuses as much as it entertains.
Naomi Watts plays a naive young Canadian, convinced her dreams can come true in Hollywood, but when she finds the beautiful Rita (Laura Harring), suffering from amnesia in the wake of a car accident, her life takes a very mysterious turn. While trying to piece Rita's life back together the picture is complicated by a highly strung director being pressured by gangsters to cast an actress in a particular role.
For approximately 90 minutes Mulholland Drive is lean and linear, about as straightforward and compelling a thriller as Lynch has ever delivered. The last half-hour is another matter altogether, being a surreal voyage through the darker realms of Lynch's imagination and musings on Hollywood's glossy-seedy hyper-reality.
Possibly completely unfathomable, but certainly unique and extraordinary, Mulholland Drive is a film to watch over and over again. After the umpteenth time you might even work it out.
