Although it might be latching onto the latest technology, My Bloody Valentine is rooted very much in the old school style of slasher films.
So there is no grim and seedy atmosphere or gruesome gore like The Hostel and Saw movies - this is a fun, unpretentious horror flick, with its tongue firmly in cheek.
The film centres on Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles) - a young man returning to the town where he grew up. He was responsible for a mining disaster six years before, which ended up sending miner Harry Warden insane. The result of which, ended up with Warden committing a mass killing spree on Valentine’s Day a year later.
Still racked by guilt, Hanniger is determined to close the mine after inheriting it from his father. However, his plan to close down the community’s lifeblood unsurprisingly doesn’t go down too well with the locals.
There is also the added complication that his high school sweetheart Sarah (Jaime King) is now in his relationship with his former childhood rival Axel (Dawson Creek’s Kerr Smith) – now the local sheriff.
Hanniger’s return also coincides with the reappearance of Warden.
While the 3D format offers some inventive horror scenes, what most impresses about the film is that the characters have more depth than you would expect from this sort of thing. The fact that they’re all flawed makes guessing who the killer is quite tricky – and when he (or she) is unmasked it could come as a genuine surprise to many.
Not perfect by any means, but a solid entry in the genre and a must have buy for any self respecting horror fan.
