Director Ron Howard has made some cracking movies (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13) and some utter stinkers (The Grinch, Far And Away) but with a Best Director Oscar tucked under his belt and Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett leading his cast, surely this Western will be ranked in the former category.
Set in New Mexico in 1885, the film stars Blanchett as Maggie Gilkeson, a gutsy female rancher who lives with her two daughters. But when one of the children (Evan Rachel Wood - Thirteen) is kidnapped by by a gang of army deserters lead by the psychic Indian named Chidin (Eric Schweig), Maggie must try and patch up the non-relationship she has with her father (Jones), who abandoned the family years earlier to 'go native' and live with the Apaches, and get him to help track and save his granddaughter.
Full of all the usual plot twists and turns we've come to expect including gunfights, escapes, false endings etc., The Missing is a quality adventure. The cast produce worthy and believable performances with Blanchett especially coming out of t things well while Salvatore Totino's cinematography perfectly captures the beauty of the remote and sun-scorched locale.
