Staking a rather weak claim for placement alongside the venerable Twilight in the growing oeuvre of teen vampire flicks is Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, based on Darren Shan's popular series of young adult novels. Compared to Stephenie Meyer's celebrated books and their subsequent movie adaptations, Cirque is quirkier, more irreverent and more male-oriented. (The latter is best exemplified by the presence of Salma Hayek, whose ample assets are on conspicuous display throughout.) It's unfortunate that it doesn't make for a better film.

In what is clearly the surprise of the season, Saw VI, the sixth and far-from-final film in the low-budget horror franchise, proves to be the one to pull the series out of its tailspin. After the third film, which climaxed with the death of the infamous Jigsaw, the series began a downhill slide that felt as if the filmmakers were simply beating a dead horse and stretching contrivances beyond believability in order to keep the money machine working. But film No. 6 is not only good, it is really good -- a rare treat that breathes new life into this sequel factory and inspires hope it is back on track.

Seeing Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn reunite on the big screen is an enticing proposition. As anyone who has watched them in The Break-Up or Made can attest, the two Swingers alums seem to step up their improv game whenever they share the frame, and their verbal sparring rarely yields anything short of comedy gold.
