It must have been painful for Eddie Murphy to have played just the one character in Dreamgirls. You could imagine him angling for the sacking of Beyonce and co. while he put on the wigs and make up.
In Norbit, like Nutty Professor etc, he does get the chance to play more than one character. Firstly, the titular Norbit who, as an infant, was thrown from a car by his parents and adopted by Mr Wong, the owner of a Chinese restaurant. Before he has the chance to find out who he is, Norbit is wooed by a very fat girl, Rasputia (Murphy), marrying her as soon as they are old enough.
Yes, Murphy does also play old Chinese man Mr Wong to add to his growing list that to date includes: Jewish man, African man, and fat old woman. The jokes include the obese Rasputia having to lift her stomach to prove that she's wearing bikini bottoms and various other fat-related gags. However, Murphy does dispense with some typical rib ticklers particularly, and surprisingly, as Mr Wong, who brings up Norbit as his own despite being a self confessed racist.
Fans of Murphy will certainly get some laughs from Norbit as it's more of a showcase of his talent than an outstanding comedy film.
Fans should also enjoy seeing how Murphy gets into character(s) during The Making of Norbit, which is one of the special features here along with Man of a Thousand Faces, Power Tap and The Stunts of Norbit.
