New York cinema criticised over letting teens into explicit film

IFC Center is ignoring NC-17 rating for lesbian drama.

A New York cinema has come under criticism for flouting the adult certificate of the sexually explicit film 'Blue Is The Warmest Colour' by allowing teenagers in to see it.

US media watchdog the Parents Television Council has written to the IFC Center, appealing against its move to ignore the film's certificate, which it has done so on what it says are 'educational' grounds.

“On behalf of the 1.3 million members of the Parents Television Council, whose mission it is to protect children from sex, violence and profanity in entertainment, I am deeply distressed to learn of your decision not to abide by the MPAA guidelines for the motion picture rating NC-17,” wrote the body's president Tim Winter.

The cinema has hit back at the criticism, however.

“At what age, or what unascertained maturity level, will a child be denied entry?,” read a statement.

“This is not a movie for young children, but it is our judgment that it is appropriate for mature, inquiring teenagers, who are looking ahead to the emotional challenges and opportunities that adulthood holds.”

The winner of this year's Palme D'Or accolade at the Cannes has courted controversy since it was screened at the festival earlier this year, thanks in no small measure to its pivotal 10-minute lesbian sex scene.

And these are only the latest headlines to spring up around director Abdellatif Kechiche's movie.

It's two principle stars, 19-year-old Adèle Exarchopoulos and 28-year-old Léa Seydoux have come out to slate the director for his treatment of them on-set, calling the shoot 'horrible'.

They claim the 10-minute sex scene took 10 days to shoot, and during one fight scene between the two lovers, he prevented them from simulating blows during a gruelling hour-long take.

Kechiche has reacted badly to their claims, calling for the movie's release to be cancelled because it has been publicly marred by the comments.
