Set your irony-gauge to full…

An Exeter cinema was forced to cancel the first screening of new movie ‘Noah’ after it was discovered the venue had flooded overnight.

Customers waiting to see the Russell Crowe-fronted film – inspired by the water-logged Bible narrative – were due to attend a 12:15pm showing at the Devon-based Vue multiplex on Friday 4 April.

However, the cinema remained closed till 2pm as staff had arrived at work earlier that morning to find excess water filling the building.

We’re guessing the flooding wasn’t on as epic a scale as the Darren Aronofsky-directed movie (or the religious text that inspired it), but no reports yet on any ark building.

Divine intervention? Probably not. But the irony certainly wasn’t lost on cinema-goers:

A spokesperson for the Exeter Vue later blamed the bizarre event on a problematic ice machine, saying: “We can confirm that there was flooding at Vue Exeter on Friday 4th April due to a fault with an ice machine.

"We are open for business as usual and are working with engineers to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible.”

This isn’t the first time ironic events have been linked to the blockbuster movie. In October 2012, production on the actual film has to be put on hold when Hurricane Sandy caused heavy rain and flooding on the New York set.

‘Noah’, co-starring Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Logan Lerman and Anthony Hopkins, is out in UK cinemas now. Take some wellies to the screening, just in case…
